Why are forged wheels worth the cost?

Forged aluminum and cast aluminum differ significantly in their characteristics due to their manufacturing processes, which directly impact their tendency to crack, ductility (bending is better than cracking!), and overall mechanical properties.

UP Forged 6061-T6 aluminum is created by applying a giant forging force to shape the metal into billet “blanks” at high temperature. This process refines the grain structure and aligns it with the overall shape of the Unplugged Performance UP Forged wheel face and barrel.

Forging refines and aligns the grain structure, resulting in a fine, uniform, and directional grain flow. This reduces internal defects like voids or inclusions, making forged aluminum less prone to cracking under stress than a cheaper and heavier cast wheel.

The aligned grain structure enhances resistance to fatigue and crack propagation, as cracks are less likely to initiate or spread across the aligned grains.

UP Forged wheels also feature improved ductility due to the refined grain structure and elimination of casting-related defects. This allows it to deform plastically under stress without fracturing, making it ideal for applications requiring toughness such as off-roading your Cybertruck or hitting potholes at speed.

Forged aluminum also has higher tensile strength and toughness compared to cast aluminum. This is due to the densification and work-hardening effects during forging, which minimize weak points that could lead to cracking. The high strength of the UP Forged wheel reduces deflection and vibration allowing the suspension to do the work of absorbing the road imperfections while allowing the Cybertruck’s unique air suspension system to really shine.

Are these Cybertruck wheels good for towing?

Unplugged Performance designed and engineered our Cybertruck wheel lineup to have a huge load rating that allows the truck to perform well beyond the truck’s own towing and hauling capacities. As far as real-world testing, we’ve towed our 11,000 lb+ race car trailer, with a fully loaded bed on 24” UP Forged wheels and it’s worked flawlessly over thousands of miles and taking on some of California’s steepest grades.
